In 1967, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer purchased about 2,000 acres of land of the Conejo Ranch of the Janss' family, with the intention of relocating their studios to the new location. Due to financial setbacks and hostile takeover battles, MGM liquidated their capital holdings. In 1978, Shapell Industries, a home builder, purchased the ranch and subdivided the property.

The "Hondo" television series utilized the ranch for many of its exteriors. A fort gate was erected on the property. While the fort interior was on the MGM backlot in Culver City, reverse angle shots showing people leaving the fort used the exterior on the ranch.

This is an artist's rendition of the facility that never was.
